Last week a study titled "Marriage: More Than A Century Of Change," conducted by Bowling Green State University National Center for Marriage and Family Research (NCFMR), found that the number of divorced or separated women in the US had risen 14% since 1920.

Researchers used data from the National Vital Statistics, Decennial Census, and American Community Survey and concluded that divorce was on the rise in America.

“The divorce rate remains high in the U.S., and individuals today are less likely to remarry than they were in the past,” Dr. Susan Brown, co-director of the NCFMR, told a press conference

Cultural changes and attitudes toward divorce have changed drastically since the 20's, which could attribute to the rise in more women choosing divorce. Gone are the days of the social pressures and obstacles surrounding divorce, especially in the case of women.

Past research has indicated that women file for divorce more often than men. According to a report titled "'These Boots Are Made For Walking': Why Most Divorce Filers Are Women," published by the American Law and Economics Review in 2000, women filed more than two-thirds of divorces in the U.S.

In addition, studies have found that other demographics have seen a rise in divorce. According to data published by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in June of this year, people over the age of 50 are ending their marriages more frequently than in the past.

While a divorce is never fun, today's couples have more choices available to them than they did 50 years ago. Knowing your legal options is half of the battle and we at James M Davis Law Office are here to help you navigate through the entire process.
